On the K-JAM however, the stylus is positioned at the bottom right of the unit, which we found very odd. The only reason we could come up with for this strange placement, is that it's perfect for when the keyboard is slid out and device is rotated and in landscape mode.
At this point, the stylus is nicely positioned for use with your right hand. However, when using the keyboard, you will nearly always use both hands so this really defeats the purpose of having the stylus in this position - we much prefer the usual top right placement. The second issue with the stylus is its length. The stylus is retractable, and when you pull it out, it automatically extends to its full length.
What we found however, is that even after light to moderate use, the stylus would retract and we had to keep extending it which soon became irritating. The shortcut buttons on the K-JAM are also quite useful. The camera button is on the bottom right but is very conveniently placed for when in landscape mode. On the left of the unit is a shortcut to the connection manager application and below that a volume toggle.
We found the connection manager button quite useful, as we find the tiny program icon in the task bar almost impossible to press. Our only complaint with the buttons is that we wish they were raised slightly to make them easier to find, especially the power button. The front of the K-JAM is also replete with controls. There are the usual Call Start and End buttons, a 5 way keypad, two soft keys and above the screen, shortcuts to both email and a web browser. At the bottom of the unit is a 2.
This includes the quality of calls, the placement of speakers and the volume of ring tones. In our tests, despite the ring tones being one of the louder ones we have heard, we still didn't think the volume was sufficient in high noise areas. The call quality on this unit however was excellent, as was the speakerphone and we had no problems using either. Perhaps the reason we found the sound quality better on this particular model is because unlike many simpler units, the K-JAM actually has two speakers, placed on either side.
Don't believe the marketing of '3D surround sound', but for a smartphone, the output isn't half bad. One aspect of the Palm Treo we loved was the switch at the top of the unit which placed the phone into Silent Mode. On the K-JAM similar functionality is available by pressing and holding down the communication manager button, which automatically places the phone into Vibrate mode and mutes the ring tones.

It is decidedly odd. Yeah, thats just weird. I doubt the hardware is any different, just the software. Great review, especially confirming Skype will work on the MHz processor — that has sold me. My old Orange SPV is long overdue for an upgrade. Could you tell a bit more how you proceeded? Where have you got the ROM? Did you do a backup of the old ROM? I did make a back up of my original ROM but I am not able to restore from it.
The only advantage I have found to the upgrade is in enabling All version numbers in the k-jam ROM are older than the Vario and that includes the Windows build number. I presume an older build implies less features or more bugs but who would know which? This leads to an error message when resetting the phone about elatepushservices. I have no idea what that does but it seems like an error message is not a positive sign. The message account setup wizard does not work at all now.
Previously it was a cinch to set up common email accounts such as Gmail or Wanadoo. Now everything has to be done manually. Also I will now get zero support from T-Mobile for my device and certainly none from i-mate. It is nice to have As m planning to buy i-mate K-JAM…….
However, it appears that people are using skype on this machine. So can some one please clear this confusion? Also, how bad is the performance of the processor since it is a slower one that the Jasjar or the Jamin? I have been using the imate KJam for quite a while now but, I am not at all satisfied with its WiFi capability..
It so happens that when the phone successfully connects to a wireless network but as soon as I open the pocket IE and the page begins to load, the phone loses the wifi connection and I have to connect it again manually.
Even when I try to update the definitions for CEAntivirus, at start of the process, the PPC is connected to the internet but as soon as the procedure reaches the download step, the wifi connection is lost. It is really frustrating at times as I am unable to open any web page completely because of this poor connectivity problem. I have just updated ROM to 2.
